Vincent P. CaraAugust 26, 1927 ~ June 24, 2017 (age 89)
Vincent P. Cara (Vince the Prince) of Sanford passed away Saturday, June 24, just two months shy of his 90th birthday. Born August 26, 1927 in Utica, NY, he was the youngest of six children whose family emigrated to the United States from Italy in search of a better life. Vince came to Sanford in 1951 while serving with the U.S. Navy at the former Sanford Naval Air Station. Other duty stations included Quonset Point, RI, Charleston, SC, Millington, TN, and Honolulu, HI, as well as Minesweeper duty aboard the U.S.S. Ability in the Mediterranean. After retiring from the Navy in 1968, he worked at several area electrical contracting companies in inventory and purchasing. Vince was most proud of his 22 years of military service, his red 1960 Chevrolet El Camino, and his 300 point bowling score. He is survived by his wife Mary (Linda) Cara of Sanford, his sons and their wives, Robert and Jolene of Sanford, James and Lisa of DeLand, his sons' mother Janette Ratliff Cara of Sanford and grandchildren Emily Cara of Norcross, GA, Alyssa Saucier of Chattanooga, TN, and Jase Cara of Apopka, along with 40 or so Beanie Babies that he did not get to pass out before departing this world. In accordance with his wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Instead, the family encourages friends and relatives to give a Beanie Baby to a deserving child.
