Daniel “Dan” Edward Mullally, Jr., Major USMC (Retired) died Wednesday, March 18, 2020, in Winter Park, FL after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. Dan was born in St. Louis, MO on October 22, 1936, the youngest child of Daniel E. Mullally, Sr. and Augusta Rose (Martin) Mullally. After graduating from Western Carolina University in 1957, Dan was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant. While stationed at MCAS Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii, in 1960, Dan met the love of his life, Kathryn E. “Kay” Tierney. After marrying in Minneapolis, MN, Dan and Kay began a life filled with love, laughter and adventure. During his service in the Marine Corps, Dan served in several capacities to include the Commanding Officer M&S Company, The Basic School at Quantico, VA; U.S. Marine Corps Liaison to the U. S. Army Infantry Board at Ft. Benning, GA; Commanding Officer, Delta Company, 1st Battalion/3rd Marine Regiment, Da Nang and Khe Sanh, Vietnam and Commanding Officer, Anglico, Force Troops. After retiring from the U. S. Marine Corps in 1977, Dan and Kay moved to Winter Park, FL with their five children. Dan began a fulfilling career in military training primarily with the University of Central Florida Institute for Simulation and Training and Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. In his community and in his family, Dan was known for his sense of humor. So many people, especially his grandchildren, started smiling and chuckling as soon as they saw him. No one ever knew what Dan would do or say next but whatever it was, it was going to bring a smile or a laugh. In his quieter moments, he was a voracious reader, never going anywhere without a book. He was a devout Catholic and throughout his life and in his final hours drew strength from his strong relationship with God. Dan and Kay were active members of their beloved church, St. Margaret Mary in Winter Park, FL. In his last days, he was surrounded by his wife of 59 years, Kay, and his children, Daniel III (Susan), Mary Theresa (Robert) Franceschini, Kevin, Timothy (Maureen), and Patrick (Mandy). He is survived by his beloved grandchildren Megan, Kailey (Hunnicutt), Brenden, Katie, Maggie, Nick (Franceschini), Ava, Hannah and Alina. Dan was predeceased by his parents and his brother, F. Joseph Mullally. His is also survived by his sister, Rosemary Scott, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a private viewing on March 25, 2020, at Collison Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at a later date. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Daniel Mullally's name to the American Cancer Society.
